Lieutenant General Pedro A. del Valle

Lieutenant General Pedro A. del Valle endures as one of the most iconic artillery leaders in Marine Corps history. Commissioned in 1915, he built a career defined by tactical and technical excellence, intellectual rigor, and a deep abiding commitment to the integration of fires and maneuver across the battlespace.

Del Valle’s mastery of artillery and fire support was on full display during World War II. As Commanding Officer of the 11th Marines at Guadalcanal, he synchronized fires that proved decisive in breaking Japanese resistance. Later, as Commanding General of the 1st Marine Division at Peleliu and Okinawa, he led Marines through some of the Pacific War’s most grueling operations, earning a reputation for disciplined leadership and sound judgment under fire.

A thinker as well as a combat leader, del Valle championed professional military education, modernization, and the advancement of fire support coordination—concepts that shaped Marine artillery for generations. His legacy endures in the standards of precision, professionalism, and lethality expected of today’s artillery officers.
