Professional Bio

LTC Samuel E. Bates, a Detroit, MI native, commissioned as a Field Artilleryman from Central Michigan University ROTC in 2001. He has served over 24 months in Iraq (OIF/OEF) and 12 months in Kuwait, with a career spanning Field Artillery, Logistics, and Training Management.

Key assignments include Platoon Leader (1-12 FA), Battalion S-3 (1-12 FA), Battery Commander (1-79 FA), Division Fire Support Officer (1AD), G37 (ARCENT), G3/Training Chief (4th ESC), G7 (377th TSC), and Deputy Chief of Staff (USACC). He currently serves as the G33 – Chief of Operations and Plans with the 87th Training Division.

LTC Bates’ extensive military education includes courses in Airborne operations, leadership, fire support, training management, logistics, and joint operations. He holds a BS in Psychology and an MS in Administration-Leadership from Central Michigan University.

His awards include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation (6 awards), Army Commendation Medal (6 awards), and various service and campaign medals. He is married to Melissa Ann Bates, and they have two daughters, Jireh and Eliana.
