Joseph John Russo

Col Russo was commissioned a 2dLt in the Marine Corps in Jul 1992 following graduation from the University of Notre Dame. Upon completion of TBS & FAOBC, he was assigned to 2d MARDIV, serving w 1/10, & 5/10. While w 10th Marines, he deployed to Okinawa, Japan (UDP). He was promoted to Capt in Jul 1996 & subsequently attended the Logistics OBC, attaining a secondary MOS in that field. He was then assigned as the S-4, Marine Aircraft Group 11, MCAS Miramar in Apr 1997. While at MAG-11, Capt Russo deployed ISO Operation Southern Watch. Capt Russo attended the Field Artillery Advance Course in Mar 2000. Assigned to 1/11, 1st MARDIV in Aug 2000, he assumed command of B, 1/11. In Aug 2001, Battery B deployed ISO 15th MEU SOC (OEF). Promoted to Maj in May 2002, he was assigned as the S-3, 1/11. In Jan 2003, he deployed w 1/11 (OIF). He then attended CGSC at Ft Leavenworth, KS, subsequently serving w the U.S. Army’s 25th Infantry Division (Light), Schofield Barracks, HI. While w 25th ID, he deployed to Afghanistan (OEF). In Jul 2006, Maj Russo reported to Recruit Training Regiment, MCRD San Diego, with assignments as Bn XO, 3d RTBn, Regt S-3/XO. From Apr 2009 - Jun 2011, LtCol Russo served as the CO, 5/11, 1st MARDIV. From Jun 2011 - Jun 2012, he attended TLS at Stanford University. He subsequently served as the G33, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe/Africa in Stuttgart, Germany until Jun 2014. From Jun 2014 - May 2015, Col Russo was assigned as the Ground Colonels Monitor, HQMC. He then served as the CO, 14th Marine Regt from May 2015 - Jun 2018, followed by an assignment as the G-3, MCRD San Diego from Jun 2018 - Jul of 2020. From Jul 2020 until retirement in Oct 2022, Col Russo served at USEUCOM in Stuttgart, Germany. From Nov 2022 - Oct 2024, Mr. Russo served as a NATO Policy Analyst, USEUCOM. He currently serves as an Operations Analyst in the U.S. Marine Corps Forces Europe/Africa G3.
